northern-paiute-narratives-pages_from_alcheringa_1-1.pdf

Overview

These Northern Paiute Narratives were pulled from a piece titled “Northern Paiute Tales” by Isabel Kelley that was published in the Journal of American Folklore, Vol 51, in 1938. This entry features two poems titled “How the Animals Chose Their Places” and “How Her Teeth Were Pulled.” Both were collected from the Northern Paiute tribe. This entry was reworked for Alcheringa by Jarold Ramsey.

Context

The Northern Paiute are a Numic tribe that originally settled near the Great Basin Region in what is currently eastern California, western Nevada, and Oregon. They historically were a nomadic tribe that followed the migration of the animals they depended on for food and the seasonal shifts of the desert they lived in. The tribe consisted of several independent bands, each made up of multiple family units. Eventually they became sedentary to protect themselves and their way of life from the advances of foreign settlers on their lands.
