The Serpent and the Fire (pp. 385-386)
. César Moro was born Alfredo Quíspez Asín in Lima, Peru (Zamora).
. Moro left to study art and dance in Paris after finishing school in Lima (Zamora). However, Moro would find his love in poetry while continuing his work as an artist, even having shows in Paris and Brussels (Zamora). Through his art, he would meet other like-minded peers such as André Breton, Benjamin Péret, and Paul Éluard (Zamora).
.
. Surrealism began in France with André Breton (Scott). Although born in France following the First World War, Surrealism spread globally and eventually found its way to Latin America (“I Paint My Reality”). Surrealism thrived in Latin America between 1925 to 1950 (“Surrealism in Latin America”). Surrealists aimed to tap into imagination lying in wait of the subconscious (“I Paint My Reality”). Surrealist works were also driven by emotion, the intimate, and the irrational (Scott). To do this, Surrealists used a variety of methods such as automatism and psychoanalysis (“I Paint My Reality”). Surrealism in Latin America differentiated itself from its French origins by creating their reality through the fantastic (“Surrealisms in Latin America”).
. \\While some Surrealist works focus on the individual, much of Surrealism also explored ancestral roots (Scott). Famous artist Frida Kahlo incorporated folk art from her native Mexico (Scott). Wifredo Lam used his art to explore his Afro-Cuban heritage using African forms (Scott).
. \\Eventually, Surrealism led to other creative movements in Latin America such as Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, and Constructivism (Scott).
