Overview
This transcription and recording convey the content and style of Rev. W T. Goodwin's sermon, delivered to a United Methodist congregation on John's Island, SC in 1971. The recording is only a portion of the whole sermon.
Commentary
Goodwin uses repetition, rhythmic variation, and an incantational style at points to enliven his message and engage listeners. The transcriber has used several devices to make this visible on the page:
- type size
- type style
- type orientation
- spacing of letters
- line breaks
In addition, this transcription works to convey the dynamic quality of the occasion by also making notes of gestures (hand clapping) and, perhaps most importantly, at least some of the responses of members of the congregation. From the perspective of ethnopoetics, this is an important element: Rev. Goodwin would have been very unlikely to have spoken this way in a recording studio or with an empty church. So the transcription honors that interactive dimension.
The visual style is constrained by type-setting technology of the day, but it's quite effective; there is a key at the end but the visual format is almost intuitively legible. (The musical notation to signal pitches at the end does require some formal musical knowledge.)
