Stanley Diamond

Biography

Stanley Diamond was born in New York to Jewish parents on January 4, 1922 (Anderson, “Stanley Diamond”). Diamond began his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before finishing his degree at New York University, majoring in English and Philosophy (Anderson). Diamond would later acquire his PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1951 (“Stanley Diamond”).

Before obtaining his doctorate, Stanley Diamond enlisted in the British Army Field Service during World War II (Anderson). This decision would lead him to his true passion and a distinguished career. While enlisted during WWII, Diamond was stationed in North Africa (Anderson). Diamond became enthralled in the antiracist writings of Franz Boas (“Stanley Diamond: In Memoriam”). Diamond returned to the Northern African countries of Ghana and Nigeria for his graduate studies and afterward (Anderson).

Other than a frequent flyer to North Africa, Stanley Diamond was a scholar and an educator. Diamond first taught at the University of California in Los Angeles (“Stanley Diamond: In Memoriam”). Unfortunately, it was short-lived and Diamond was fired for his outspoken views against McCarthyism (“Stanley Diamond: In Memoriam”).
